Two nights at The American Club in Kohler for the Straits and the Irish, both Pete Dye, between them three PGA Championships and a Ryder Cup. Then three nights in the sand hills at Sand Valley for Coore and Crenshaw's original and David McLay Kidd's Mammoth Dunes, with the Sandbox at dusk and a short Doak course on the way out if the group wants one more.

This journey is hosted from start to finish by Cordie Walker of GolfWell, who travels with the group for all six days. Your host sets the tone of the week, arranges the daily play formats and games, hosts the welcome and farewell dinners, and makes sure everyone in the group knows each other by the end of the first evening.
A hosted journey is different from a trip you book alone. You arrive as individuals and you leave as a group. The golf is the reason, but the table at the end of each day is what people remember.

Two resorts,
one straight line west
Kohler sits on the Lake Michigan shore an hour north of Milwaukee, where Pete Dye moved two million cubic yards of earth to build a links on a flat bluff and dared anyone to say it wasn't one. Sand Valley sits three hours west in the middle of the state, on ancient glacial sand that drains like Bandon and grows fescue like Scotland. This trip plays both in one sweep, and you never unpack more than twice.
This is a
walking trip
Three of the four rounds on this itinerary cannot be played from a cart, and the fourth is better without one. Every course at Sand Valley is walking-only by rule. The Straits Course is walking-only with a caddie required. The Irish allows carts, but almost nobody who has come this far takes one.
Two honest things. First, this is four rounds of real walking in four days, on courses with elevation, and it is worth knowing that before you sign up rather than after. Second, caddies here are a genuine cost, not a courtesy. The Straits requires one at $90 plus gratuity. Sand Valley offers them at $100 plus gratuity. Budget roughly $150 to $175 per caddied round including the tip, paid in cash on the day.
The upside is what a walked trip gives you. Four hours with a caddie who knows every blind shot on the Straits. The Sandbox at dusk with a drink in your hand. The kind of week that only happens when nobody is driving.

Private transfer from Milwaukee Airport, an hour north up the Lake Michigan shore to Kohler and The American Club. Check in, a walk through the village, and for anyone who lands early, an afternoon at Kohler Waters Spa or a warm-up on the range at Blackwolf Run. A hosted welcome dinner at The Immigrant Restaurant to open the week.
Round One · Whistling Straits
The Straits Course
Twenty minutes up the lakeshore from the hotel. Pete Dye's 1998 masterpiece along two miles of Lake Michigan bluff, home to the 2004, 2010 and 2015 PGA Championships and the 2021 Ryder Cup. Nearly a thousand bunkers, sheep on the hillsides, and eight holes hugging the water. Walking only, caddie required, and one of the great walks in American golf. Lunch in the Irish-style clubhouse looking down the 18th, then an afternoon at Kohler Waters Spa or the Horse and Plow.
Round Two · The Irish Course · Transfer West
The Irish, then the Sand Hills
A morning round on the Straits' inland sibling, opened in 2000 and by some distance the more underrated of the two. Dye routed it through dunes, grassland and four creeks, with blind shots and an island-style green at the 13th that the members prefer. Then the drive west, just under three hours through Wisconsin farmland into the sand hills, to Sand Valley. Check in, and the Sandbox at dusk: seventeen par threes by Coore and Crenshaw, played with a drink in your hand.
Round Three · Sand Valley
Sand Valley
The course that started it all in 2017. Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw found a pine plantation on top of a prehistoric sand dune and stripped it back to what was underneath: exposed sand, native grasses, enormous rolling fairways and greens that run away from you. It plays like the inland links it was meant to be, and it holds up as the resort's finest test. Dinner at Aldo's.
Round Four · Mammoth Dunes
Mammoth Dunes
David McLay Kidd's 2018 answer to its neighbour, and the round most people talk about on the flight home. Kidd built it to defend birdie rather than par: fairways eighty yards wide, greens the size of a suburban lot, a drivable par four at the 6th, and a scale to the whole thing that makes you feel like you're playing golf on the moon. Career-low rounds happen here. A hosted farewell dinner to close the week.

Sand Valley to Milwaukee
For groups with an afternoon flight, an early loop of Sedge Valley: Tom Doak's par-68 at just under 5,900 yards, built in the spirit of the English heathland and playable in under three hours. Then the drive back to Milwaukee, just under three hours, for onward flights. Your concierge handles luggage, check-out and the timings.

Pete Dye twice on the lakeshore, then Coore and Crenshaw and David McLay Kidd on the sand. Nothing on this list is a warm-up.
Where you'll rest your clubs
A Forbes five-star on the lakeshore side, and the lodge in the sand hills on the other. Both sit on the golf, so the first tee is a short walk each morning.
The American Club
Built in 1918 as a dormitory for the immigrant workers of the Kohler Company and turned, sixty years later, into the only Forbes five-star resort in the Midwest. Red brick, slate roofs, and every bathroom a showroom. The Immigrant Restaurant for dinner, the Horse and Plow for the pint after, and Kohler Waters Spa for the afternoon you skip the second eighteen. Whistling Straits is twenty minutes north, Blackwolf Run five minutes away.
Sand Valley Lodge
Lodge rooms and suites looking out over the first tee of Mammoth Dunes, with cottages and estate homes across the property for groups who'd rather share a porch. Aldo's for a farm-sourced dinner, the Mammoth Bar for the nightcap, Craig's Porch for a two-dollar breakfast sandwich on the way to the tee, and Bill's BBQ overlooking the Sandbox. Everything here is designed around walking out the door with your bag on your shoulder.

Tom Doak's recreation of the lost Long Island Lido is open to Sand Valley resort guests Sunday through Thursday, and staying on property is what gets you on it. Swap it for Mammoth Dunes or add it as a fifth round. Sedge Valley on the morning of departure is the lighter option: par 68, under three hours, and you still make an afternoon flight.
