Forty miles of coastline,
the densest links concentration on earth
From Musselburgh in the west to Dunbar in the east, the East Lothian coast carries more world-ranked links courses per square mile than any stretch of golfing land anywhere — including a single village, Gullane, where Muirfield, Gullane No.1, and the Renaissance Club share a postcode with two more 18-hole layouts. This is the country where the rules of golf were written, where the four-and-a-quarter-inch hole was invented, and where the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers has been playing since 1744.
Six rounds, anchored on Day 1 by a hickory-clubs round on the world's second-oldest course, played within the Musselburgh Racetrack as it has been since the 1600s — and climaxing on Day 6 with a 36-hole day at Muirfield, the AM-fourballs-and-PM-foursomes round that many regard as the finest single day's golf anywhere on earth. Six nights at Malmaison Edinburgh City on St Andrews Square — boutique luxury in the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town, thirty minutes from every tee. Day 7 stays clear for a leisurely departure.
- Hickory golf at Musselburgh Old Links — world's 2nd oldest course, six-time Open host
- The Renaissance Club — Tom Doak's first Scottish design, Genesis Scottish Open host
- North Berwick (West) — World #42, est. 1832, the original Redan
- Dumbarnie Links — Clive Clark's modern Forth coast masterpiece
- Gullane No.1 — Bernard Darwin's beloved hill, 2× Scottish Open host
- Muirfield 36-Hole Experience — fourballs, carvery lunch, foursomes
- Malmaison Edinburgh City — boutique 4-star on St Andrews Square
Forty miles of coast,
twenty-one championship links
The East Lothian coastline is golf's deepest well. Every village from Musselburgh to Dunbar has at least one championship links; Gullane alone has five within walking distance of the high street. A single base in Edinburgh — thirty minutes inland — places every tee within an easy drive, the Firth of Forth on one shoulder and the Lammermuirs on the other.
Malmaison Edinburgh City
St Andrews Square
The Edinburgh "Mal" sits on St Andrews Square at the eastern end of George Street — the dignified Georgian heart of Edinburgh's New Town, a five-minute walk from Princes Street and the Royal Mile, a seven-minute walk from Waverley Station, and thirty minutes inland from the East Lothian links. 72 individually designed rooms inspired by the surrounding Rose and Thistle Streets, each with a super-king bed, monsoon shower, Nespresso machine, and Arran Aromatics toiletries.
Dining is at Chez Mal Brasserie & Bar — Chef Director John Woodward's modern British kitchen, fired over Konro and Josper grills — and post-round drinks at the Mal Bar, a quietly atmospheric lounge anchoring the lobby with cocktails, single malts, and dim Caledonian textures.
- 72 designer rooms & suites
- Chez Mal Brasserie & Bar
- Konro & Josper grill kitchen
- Mal Bar — cocktails & whisky
- 24-hour concierge desk
- St Andrews Square address
- 5 min walk to Royal Mile
- 30 min from Edinburgh Airport
Edinburgh
old volcano, new world heritage
The Old Town and New Town together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The full Royal Mile, from Castle to Holyrood Palace, is a five-minute walk from your hotel door — every non-golf evening leaves time to explore.
Thirty-six holes
at the world's oldest club
The Muirfield 36-Hole Experience is the headline round of the trip — and, for many who play it, the best day of golf they will ever have. Visitor days at Muirfield are Tuesdays and Thursdays only; visitor numbers are capped, dress codes are rigorously upheld, and tee times are released up to two years in advance. Trip dates are aligned at booking so Day 6 falls on a Tuesday or Thursday — typically a Saturday-to-Friday or Thursday-to-Wednesday week.
The format follows the rhythm the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers has kept for generations. A morning round of fourballs, teeing off between 8.20am and 10.10am. A three-course carvery lunch in the dining room, jacket-and-tie obligatory after 11.30am. An afternoon round of foursomes — alternate shot, the way the founding members played — with the tee time confirmed on booking.
The course itself is famously two loops within a loop: a clockwise outward nine around the perimeter, an anti-clockwise inward nine through the heart of the property. The wind never blows from the same direction for two holes in a row. Dr Alister MacKenzie called Muirfield the fairest test of golf ever built; Jack Nicklaus said it is his favourite course in the world. World #10. Scotland #2. Sixteen Open Championships and counting.
Muirfield's 2026 visitor diary is fully booked through October; this itinerary is built around a confirmed 2027 tee time secured in advance through Mosaico's tour-operator allocation.

Seven days, six rounds, and a hickory-to-Muirfield arc that starts in 1567 and ends in the world's oldest clubhouse.
Arrival · Round One · Musselburgh
Hickory Golf at Musselburgh Old Links
Private transfers from Edinburgh Airport drop you and your luggage at Malmaison Edinburgh City on St Andrews Square — a fifteen-minute drive. After a light lunch at Chez Mal Brasserie and time to refresh, an afternoon transfer takes you east to Musselburgh — conveniently on the airport route — to the world's second-oldest golf course, where Mary Queen of Scots is reputed to have played in 1567 and where the Open Championship was held six times between 1874 and 1889. The course sits inside the Musselburgh Racetrack, with six greens enclosed by the racecourse fencing. Today's round is played the way it was meant to be — with traditional hickory clubs supplied by Montgomery Golf Ltd of North Berwick. Nine holes, par 34, 2,874 yards. The 4¼-inch hole diameter that is the standard everywhere in golf today was originally cut here. Drinks at Mrs Forman's pub behind the 4th green that still has the hatch through which 19th-century golfers ordered their drams. Return to Edinburgh for welcome dinner at Chez Mal Brasserie, with cocktails to follow at the Mal Bar.
Round Two · Archerfield
The Renaissance Club
Forty minutes east of Edinburgh, on a parcel of land swapped with neighbouring Muirfield in 2013, sits Tom Doak's first Scottish design — and the host of the Genesis Scottish Open from 2019 to 2025. Doak's hallmarks are everywhere: bold contouring, multiple route options off most tees, fescue greens that demand running approaches more often than aerial ones. Scotland #27, Lothians #4. Lunch in the modern clubhouse before the return drive to Edinburgh, with the afternoon at leisure for a guided Royal Mile walking tour or independent exploration.
Round Three · North Berwick
North Berwick West Links
Founded 1832, in continuous play ever since, and home to the original Redan — the par-3 15th whose template has been copied at hundreds of courses worldwide, including National Golf Links of America and Shinnecock Hills. North Berwick is golf at its most idiosyncratic and most beloved: stone walls in play, blind shots over dunes, the Bass Rock and Craigleith island filling every horizon. World #42, B&I #14, Scotland #6. Lunch at the clubhouse overlooking the Forth.
Round Four · Largo Bay
Dumbarnie Links
A change of coastline today. An hour's drive north across the Forth Road Bridge into Fife, to Largo Bay and the Balcarres Estate — where the Lord Balniel family commissioned former Ryder Cup player Clive Clark to design Dumbarnie Links, opened to the public in May 2020. Six hundred man-made dunes, generous fairways with risk-reward decisions on nearly every tee, and an elevated clubhouse with views down to the Firth of Forth and across to North Berwick. Host of the 2021 Women's Scottish Open within a year of opening. B&I #45, Scotland #28.
Round Five · Gullane Hill
Gullane No.1
The course Bernard Darwin called "one of the most beautiful spots in the world" — the highest links in East Lothian, climbing Gullane Hill before turning back toward the village and the Forth. Founded 1884, host to the 2015 and 2018 Scottish Opens (won by Rickie Fowler and Brandon Stone respectively), and the only course in the world where you can stand on the seventh tee and see Edinburgh, the Forth Bridges, the Lammermuirs, North Berwick, and the entire Fife coast in a single 360-degree panorama. Scotland #22, Lothians #3. Tonight: dinner reservation in Gullane village before the return to Edinburgh — recommendations available at booking.
Round Six · Muirfield
The Muirfield 36-Hole Experience
The headline round. Morning fourballs at Muirfield with an 8.20–10.10am tee time. Three-course carvery lunch in the dining room — jackets and ties from 11.30am, no exceptions. Afternoon foursomes. The day finishes with a dram in the panoramic gentlemen's bar overlooking the 18th green, then return to Edinburgh for a final farewell dinner. Caddies are highly recommended for the day (£140 for 36 holes, plus gratuity) and can be arranged in advance via your concierge.
