The road to Newcastle, County Down — Mountains of Mourne sweeping down to the sea

Where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea.

Northern Ireland's two greatest links courses sit fifty miles apart on opposite coasts of the same small country — Royal County Down beneath the Mournes, Royal Portrush above the Causeway. Between them, the recently transformed Slieve Donard hotel and the soaring Grand Central in Belfast. Around them, two of the most beloved warm-up courses in Ireland: Ardglass on its medieval clifftop, and Portstewart with its towering dunes.

This is a tight, considered six-day journey across an island that has, in the last decade, quietly become the most decorated golfing destination in Europe — and one of the most rewarding to visit beyond the fairway.

  • 3 nights at Slieve Donard — Marine & Lawn's reimagined Victorian landmark, edge of Royal County Down
  • 2 nights at Grand Central Belfast — the city's tallest building, 23rd-floor Observatory bar
  • Royal County Down — ranked #1 in the UK & Ireland by Golf Monthly, world top 5
  • Royal Portrush — host of The 153rd Open Championship 2025, world top 20
  • Ardglass — the oldest clubhouse in world golf, built into a 13th-century castle
  • Portstewart — host of the 2017 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, Causeway Coast jewel
  • Private transfers throughout · welcome & farewell dinners · all green fees included

Two coasts. Four legends.

Sleep at the foot of Northern Ireland's highest mountain, then in the heart of its capital. Play the warm-up before the world #1, the warm-up before the Open champion's course. Six days. Five nights. Four rounds that almost no other country in the world could put on a single itinerary.

Six Days in Northern Ireland

A Mournes-first sequence, building from Ardglass to Royal County Down, then north to the Causeway for the 36-hole finale.

Day01

Arrival · Belfast to Newcastle

Into the Mournes

Fly into Belfast International (BFS) or City (BHD) — for those coming from the U.S., often via Dublin (DUB). Private transfer south through County Down to Newcastle, where Slieve Donard sits on six acres of beachfront grounds at the foot of Northern Ireland's highest mountain. Settle in, take a stroll along the golden strand, then welcome dinner at the hotel's Percy French — named for the local poet who wrote "where the mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea."

Arrival Welcome Dinner
Day02

Round 1 · Ardglass Golf Club

Cannons Behind the First Tee

A 30-minute drive south along the Lecale coast brings you to Ardglass — a clifftop links wrapped around a medieval fishing harbour, with the oldest clubhouse in world golf, built into the ruins of a 13th-century castle. Cannons sit behind the 1st tee, perched at the water's edge. Once the warm-up that golfers bypassed on the way to Royal County Down, Ardglass has had a transformative decade — it is now firmly a must-play. Lunch in the historic clubhouse, return to Slieve Donard for spa, dinner in town.

Round 01 Clifftop Links 13th-c Clubhouse
Day03

Round 2 · Royal County Down

The Best in the British Isles

A fifteen-minute walk from the hotel — quite literally next door — to one of golf's great cathedrals. Royal County Down's Championship Links was laid out in 1889 and shaped by Old Tom Morris, Harry Vardon, and Harry Colt. Today it sits at #1 in the Golf Monthly Top 100 UK & Ireland and inside the world top 5. Bearded bunkers, blind drives, the Mournes on your shoulder, Dundrum Bay beneath. Mandatory caddie or fore-caddie — the local knowledge is part of the experience. Quiet dinner at Slieve Donard's Oak Room.

Round 02 UK&I #1 Old Tom Morris · Harry Colt
Day04

Slieve Donard to Belfast

Mournes Morning, Belfast Evening

A leisurely morning — spa at Slieve Donard, walk in Tollymore Forest Park, or up the lower slopes of Slieve Donard itself. Late-morning private transfer 1 hour 15 minutes north to Belfast and the Grand Central Hotel — the tallest building in the city, set on Bedford Street in the Linen Quarter, a block from City Hall. Afternoon at the Titanic Quarter (Northern Ireland's most-visited attraction), Cathedral Quarter for early-evening pints in the cobbled lanes, dinner at the hotel's Seahorse Restaurant. A nightcap at the Observatory — the 23rd-floor 360-degree rooftop bar with the best view in Belfast.

Round 3 & 4 · Causeway Coast

Thirty-Six on the Atlantic

The big day. Private driver collects you early for the 1-hour 10-minute drive north to Portstewart — round 3 on the Strand Course, where Jon Rahm shot 24-under to win the 2017 Irish Open through some of the most thrilling dunes in links golf. Lunch overlooking the Atlantic, then five minutes' drive east to Royal Portrush. The final round, on the Dunluce Links — host of The 153rd Open Championship in 2025, Harry Colt's masterpiece, recently reshaped by Mackenzie & Ebert. Eighteen holes finishing under the gaze of the 13th-century Dunluce Castle ruins. Drive back to Belfast for the farewell dinner in the Cathedral Quarter.
