The Riviera in two chapters:
Saint-Tropez and the East
The Côte d'Azur is properly two regions. To the west, the Saint-Tropez peninsula on the Var coast — the bohemian-glamour Riviera, all megayachts in the Old Port and rosé at Pampelonne. Two hours east, the Alpes-Maritimes coast — Belle Époque Nice, the Place du Casino in Monaco, La Croisette in Cannes, and the perched medieval villages of Èze and Saint-Paul-de-Vence between them. This trip gives you both, with no more than two unpacks across nine nights.
Three nights at Hotel Byblos — the iconic 5★ Palace just back from the village in Saint-Tropez, opened in 1967 and the original symbol of Riviera glamour — for the western chapter. Six nights at Le Negresco — the 1913 Belle Époque Palace on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, with its private 6,000-piece art collection and Le Chantecler's two Michelin stars — as the base for everything east. Both hold France's highest hotel classification, the Palace distinction, awarded to fewer than thirty properties in the country.
- Hotel Byblos Saint-Tropez — 5★ Palace, opened 1967
- Le Negresco Nice — 5★ Palace, opened 1913
- Private yacht day along the Saint-Tropez peninsula
- Monaco — Casino de Monte-Carlo, Le Rocher, the Palace
- Cannes — La Croisette, Le Suquet, Îles de Lérins
- Èze & Cap-Ferrat — Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild & La Chèvre d'Or
- Lunch at La Colombe d'Or in Saint-Paul-de-Vence
From the Saint-Tropez peninsula
to the Place du Casino
This is the duality of the Côte d'Azur. Saint-Tropez is the Riviera as the world imagines it — sand, rosé, the legendary beach clubs of Pampelonne, pétanque under the plane trees of the Place des Lices. The eastern coast is the Riviera as it was invented in the nineteenth century by English aristocrats and Russian grand dukes — Belle Époque palaces, Charles Garnier's casino in Monaco, the Promenade des Anglais, and the perched villages on the corniche where Matisse, Picasso, Cocteau and Chagall came to paint and stayed to die. Two hours separate them; nine nights make the most of both.
Your Detailed Mosaic
Ten days, nine nights, two unpacks. The Saint-Tropez chapter opens the trip; five distinct day excursions from Le Negresco fill the rest.
Arrival · Saint-Tropez
Welcome to the Riviera
Private transfers from Nice Côte d'Azur Airport (1hr 45min) westward to Hotel Byblos. Settle into your Junior Suite with view over the property's tropical gardens and fountained courtyard — Byblos is built as a Mediterranean village in itself, all ochre walls and bougainvillea. Welcome dinner at Cucina Byblos by Alain Ducasse, paired with a flight of Provençal rosé from the Var hills behind Saint-Tropez.
Saint-Tropez · Pampelonne
The Beach & the Village
A late breakfast on the terrace, then ten minutes south to Pampelonne Beach — the legendary five-kilometre arc of white sand on the eastern side of the peninsula, lined with the beach clubs that defined the Saint-Tropez summer myth. Long lunch reserved at Club 55, the original 1955 beach restaurant where Brigitte Bardot's And God Created Woman crew first ate, still run by the Mouton family. Afternoon walking tour of the village: the Old Port's megayacht parade, the 17th-century Citadelle, the Musée de l'Annonciade's Pointillist and Fauvist collection, and the Place des Lices for an evening apéro under the plane trees.
The Saint-Tropez Peninsula · By Sea
Private Yacht Day
Eight hours aboard a private motor yacht with crew and onboard chef. The classic Saint-Tropez itinerary heads east along the peninsula coast — past the calanques of Cap Lardier and the wild beaches of the Domaine du Rayol — with optional stops to swim and snorkel in the protected coves around Cap Taillat. Lunch served on board, anchored in Pampelonne Bay. Champagne return into the Old Port at golden hour, with the village rising out of the water in front of you. Dinner at La Vague d'Or back at the property.
Saint-Tropez to Nice · The Esterel Coast
Transfer East to Le Negresco
A slow morning at Byblos before the eastward drive. Two-hour private transfer along the dramatic Esterel coast road — the red porphyry cliffs between Saint-Raphaël and Cannes, rivalling anything in Big Sur for beauty. Lunch in the perched village of Mougins, the inland hill town where Picasso spent his last years. Late-afternoon arrival at Le Negresco. Settle into your Belle Époque suite. Dinner in Vieux Nice — perhaps La Petite Maison, the 1988 institution where Niçoise lunch culture still happens nightly.
Nice · The City Day
Vieux Nice & the Matisse Hill
A full Nice day with private guide. Morning in Vieux Nice — the warren of ochre Italianate streets behind the Cours Saleya flower and produce market, the Cathédrale Sainte-Réparate, and the climb up Castle Hill (or by elevator) for the panorama over the Baie des Anges. Lunch at Le Plongeoir — the cliff-top restaurant on a former Cap-de-Nice diving platform, with one of the most photographed sea-front rooms in France. Afternoon at the Musée Matisse on the Cimiez hill (Matisse lived in Nice from 1917 until his death in 1954) and the adjacent Musée Marc Chagall.
Monaco · The Principality
Le Rocher & the Place du Casino
Thirty minutes east along the Moyenne Corniche to Monaco. Morning private guide on Le Rocher — the medieval old town on the rock, the Prince's Palace, the Cathédrale (where Grace Kelly is buried), and the Oceanographic Museum founded by Prince Albert I and directed by Jacques Cousteau for thirty years. Lunch at La Marée or Maya Bay. Afternoon at the Place du Casino — Charles Garnier's 1879 Belle Époque casino, the Hôtel de Paris, and an aperitif at the Café de Paris terrace before returning to Le Negresco.
Cap-Ferrat & Èze · The Corniche
Villa Ephrussi & La Chèvre d'Or
A day on the corniche between Nice and Monaco. Morning at the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild on Cap-Ferrat — Béatrice de Rothschild's 1912 pink mansion built around nine themed gardens (French, Spanish, Florentine, Japanese, lapidary…) overlooking the bay. Lunch at La Chèvre d'Or, the Michelin-starred restaurant of the eponymous 5★ Relais & Châteaux hotel built into the medieval walls of Èze, with terraces 400 metres above the sea. Afternoon at Villefranche-sur-Mer — the perfect ochre fishing harbour where Cocteau decorated the Chapelle Saint-Pierre — before returning along the Basse Corniche.
Cannes & Antibes
La Croisette & the Picasso Museum
Thirty minutes west to Cannes. Morning along La Croisette — the seafront promenade where the Palais des Festivals sits and the May red carpet rolls — before climbing into Le Suquet, the medieval old town above the harbour, for the panoramic view from the Musée de la Castre. Lunch at Tetou, the 1920s beach restaurant in Golfe-Juan that has served the same bouillabaisse to four generations of film stars. Afternoon at the Musée Picasso in Antibes' Château Grimaldi — Picasso's 1946 studio, where he painted the great Joie de Vivre, given to the city as a gift.
Saint-Paul-de-Vence · Inland
Fondation Maeght & La Colombe d'Or
A final day inland to Saint-Paul-de-Vence — the medieval hilltop village twenty minutes north of Nice that became the most important modern art village in France. Morning at the Fondation Maeght — the 1964 modernist museum housing the works Aimé and Marguerite Maeght collected from their friends Miró, Calder, Giacometti, Chagall and Léger. Lunch at La Colombe d'Or, the legendary inn where 20th-century artists paid for their meals with paintings — the dining-room walls now hold Picassos, Matisses, Mirós and Légers. Return to Le Negresco for a farewell dinner at Le Chantecler, the Negresco's two-Michelin-star restaurant, with sommelier-paired wine flights.
