Few stretches of coastline anywhere hold as dense a concentration of great links golf as the thirteen miles between Hoylake and Lytham. This Mosaic Journey plays five of them — three Open Championship venues and two of the finest members' clubs on the Sefton Coast — all reached from a single boutique base in Southport.
Formby's pine-sheltered heathland links opens the week, followed by neighbouring Hillside's dune-top drama. A day across the Mersey brings Royal Liverpool at Hoylake — 2023 Open host and the second-oldest seaside links in England — before a run north to Royal Lytham & St Annes, the 2028 Open venue. The week closes on home turf at Royal Birkdale, host of the 154th Open Championship in 2026 and widely regarded as the fairest test in the Open rota.

Round One · Formby
Formby Golf Club
Founded in 1884 and ranked among England's Top 100, Formby is a hybrid unlike anything else on the Sefton Coast — pine-sheltered heathland corridors giving way to open dune-land links. The clubhouse, with its Dormy accommodation and Curtis Cup history, is among the finest in world golf. Lunch in the members' dining room before returning to Southport for the evening at leisure.
Round Two · Hillside
Hillside Golf Club
A five-minute drive — or a walk, for the energetic — from your hotel door. Hillside plays through the same towering dune-land as neighbouring Royal Birkdale, with several holes regarded among the finest closing stretches in English golf. Over 7,000 yards from the back tees, with sweeping Irish Sea views from the elevated back nine. An early finish leaves the afternoon free to explore Southport or rest before the Mersey crossing tomorrow.
Round Three · Hoylake
Royal Liverpool Golf Club
A private transfer across the Mersey — via the Kingsway Tunnel or the Mersey Ferry, weather and timing permitting — to Hoylake, on the Wirral peninsula between the Mersey and Dee estuaries. Founded in 1869, Royal Liverpool is the second-oldest seaside links in England and has hosted the Open Championship thirteen times, most recently Brian Harman's 2023 victory and Tiger Woods' virtuoso 2006 win. Flat by links standards but relentlessly exacting, with internal out-of-bounds the course is known for. Lunch in the historic clubhouse — red-jacketed captains' portraits dating to 1885 line the dining room.
Round Four · Lytham
Royal Lytham & St Annes
North along the Lancashire coast to St Annes, where Royal Lytham's famously unglamorous approach — hemmed by houses and a railway line, the sea itself never in view — gives way to one of the most storied finishes in the Open rota. More than two hundred bunkers, most a century old, an unusual par-3 opening hole, and a closing run of six straight par 4s that has broken and made major champions, from Bobby Jones to Seve Ballesteros, twice. Royal Lytham hosts its next Open Championship in 2028. Return to Southport for a mid-week dinner at leisure.
Round Five · Southport
Royal Birkdale Golf Club
The headline round, and a short transfer from The Vincent Hotel. Royal Birkdale routes through natural valleys between Southport's towering dunes rather than forcing play over them — a design principle established by three generations of the Hawtree family that produces links golf widely considered the fairest test in the Open rota. The Art Deco clubhouse, resembling an ocean liner in the dunes, has watched ten Open Championships since 1954; Royal Birkdale hosts its eleventh, the 154th Open, in July 2026. Farewell dinner at The Vincent Hotel this evening.
